Chapter 5

“Give ‘em all you got!”

Stone fired back and forth. There were so many targets he barely had to aim, except for those scaling the ladders. A shot clipped his cheek, and he recoiled slightly, blood dripping from his wound. He gritted his teeth and went right back to the wall as a grappling hook swung over the wall in front of him. It creaked as tension was applied. He looked over the wall, and a Prian was halfway up the climb. He took aim at them, but out of the corner of his eye spotted a glimmer of movement. A Firanwar swung for his head from another enemy who had reached the top of a ladder. He didn’t have time to bring his weapon about, so he let it fall to his feet. He grabbed the Prian’s wrist before the blade could descend, pulling him over the parapet and down to his feet.

As they crashed down, the Prian lost hold of the blade. Stone took it up and thrust it into its body, drawing it back out. The one scaling the rope was just reaching the top as he made eye contact. He lifted the blade, and they lifted their own to defend, but his came crashing down against the rope of the hook and sheared it in one. The rebel vanished from view, but Stone leant over just in time to see him crush another on the ground. He looked at the enemy weapon in his hand with a newfound sense of appreciation and couldn’t help but feel pleased with his trophy.

“That was badass!” Hawkins had been watching the whole thing, his own Firanwar hanging from his armour by a scabbard he’d taken from a Rhepoy.

An explosion rang out along the wall. Chunks of stone flew up into the sky from a charge blowing another breach in the wall. King looked out to the vast horde facing them. It seemed there was no end to the enemy who fought relentlessly and fearlessly to get inside.

“Christ, how the hell can we hold this?”

“We have to hold. We can’t let this town fall!” Rossman slipped a new magazine into his Aquilla, but as he was doing so, a Prian leapt over the parapet to attack him. He wasn’t ready and had been too focused on the explosion to realise what was happening. King activated the blade of his rifle and drove it through his attacker. He drew the blade back out, leaving a gaping hole in the alien’s chest. It was still alive, but barely, and yet still mustered the strength to lift their weapon to strike. King drove forward with his Aquilla held in front like a staff and pushed the Prian out and over the edge with a violent shove.

“Thanks,” said Rossman.

“Sir, we can’t hold this. You know we can’t.”

“If we lose Sawnmore, Luknowa and Delphi are in great danger.”

“We are in great danger!”

Rossman looked out to their attackers and went to take aim, hesitating as he marvelled at the sheer number of them.
